Key Technologies Enabling Traceability
LVMH and its Maisons are using cutting-edge technologies to bring supply chain visibility to life.
| TECHNOLOGY | HOW IT WORKS | LVMH APPLICATION |
| Blockchain | Creates an immutable, decentralised record of each step in a product’s journey that cannot be altered retroactively | LVMH’s AURA blockchain platform tracks product authenticity and provenance for Louis Vuitton, Dior, and other Maisons |
| Digital Product Passport (DPP) | A digital record attached to each product containing verified information about its materials, origin, environmental impact, and repairability | Required under EU regulation by 2030; LVMH is piloting DPPs across several Maisons to meet compliance deadlines |
| QR Codes & NFC Tags | Physical tags embedded in or attached to products that link to a digital record of the product’s supply chain journey | Enables clients to verify product authenticity and access sustainability information via smartphone at point of purchase |
| Supplier Auditing Platforms | Digital platforms that collect, verify, and report on supplier environmental and social performance data | LVMH uses third-party auditing and its own supplier platform to monitor compliance across Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers |
Traceability in Action Across the Maisons
LVMH — AURA Blockchain Platform
In 2021, LVMH launched AURA, the world’s first luxury blockchain platform, in collaboration with Prada Group and Richemont. AURA provides a shared, tamper-proof digital record of product authenticity and provenance — allowing clients of participating Maisons to verify the origin and history of their purchases via a simple QR code scan. Louis Vuitton and Parfums Christian Dior were among the first Maisons to implement AURA at scale.
Bulgari — Diamond Traceability
Bulgari has implemented end-to-end traceability for the diamonds used in its high jewellery collections, working with De Beers’ Tracr blockchain platform to verify that each stone is conflict-free, ethically sourced, and traceable to its mine of origin. Clients purchasing Bulgari high jewellery can access a verified digital record of their stone’s provenance — transforming transparency into a luxury experience in its own right.
Louis Vuitton — Leather Goods Traceability
Louis Vuitton has mapped its leather supply chain from tannery to finished product, working with leather suppliers to certify the origin and environmental compliance of all hides used in its core product lines. This mapping exercise forms the foundation for Louis Vuitton’s response to the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, which will require companies to identify and address human rights and environmental risks throughout their supply chains.
Hennessy — Vineyard Origin Certification
Hennessy operates one of the most transparent agricultural supply chains in the luxury industry, with each bottle of cognac traceable to the specific vineyard plots and harvest years that contributed to the blend. The Hennessy estate works with a network of over 1,600 partner growers, each of whom is registered in Hennessy’s provenance system — allowing the Maison to verify the origin, growing practices, and environmental compliance of every grape used in production.
Sephora — Ingredient Transparency Initiative
Sephora has committed to publishing full ingredient lists and sourcing information for all products in its own-brand range, going beyond regulatory requirements to provide clients with clear, accessible information about what is in their products and where key ingredients come from. This initiative responds directly to growing consumer demand for cosmetic ingredient transparency and positions Sephora as a leader in beauty supply chain disclosure.
